College To Determine
Changes In Council
Several contemplated changes in the
constitution of the College of Arts and
Sciences Council may be brought before
the College student body before the
elections later this spring.
The reason amendments to the constitution
may be brought before the
students is the concern on the part of the
College Student Council members that 20
capable students willing to do the job will
not be found.
In addition, some Student Council
members feel that the electing of too
many different positions will dilute the
interest and competition that enables qualified,
responsible leaders to fill all the vacant
positions.
As the constitution now stands, the
elections of a Chairman, Vice-Chairman, and
five representatives from each of the classes
except the first year class is called for this
spring.
March Election
However, students may have the opportunity
to change the constitution prior to these
elections. Student Councilman Kevin Mannix
said that on the ballot for the March election of
the College President, at least two amendments
to the College Council's constitution will
probably appear.
One of these will propose the election of the
Council's Chairman and Vice-Chairman by the
elected members of the Council instead of the
students of the College.
The other amendment will seek to reduce
the size of the Council from 20 members,
which is presently called for, to something like
ten members.
This means the College would elect only two
representatives from each class not the five
that are now due for election later this
semester.
Curriculum Evaluation
The College Council, according to Mr.
Mannix, will only be ealing with curriculum
evaluation, the appointing of students to
faculty committees, and changes in the College
curriculum.
The College Councilmen believe that 20
students are not needed to full the
responsibilities of the Council. By putting these
amendments on the ballot in the March
election, the attitude of the College student
body will be revealed concerning these issues.
Positions Created
When the constitution was being written
prior to last fall's cation, the new positions
of Chairman and Vice-Chairman were created
because the College officers that are already
established are concerned with the Honor
Committee.
Although these College officers will not
serve on the Council, the Student Council
members from the College will. The councilmen
will form the core of the new College Council.
Students in the College are urged to vote on
these amendments when they pick up their
ballots in the March election.
