Crawford Appointed
Public Affairs Head
Edwin M. Crawford, director of the
Office of Institutional Research of the
National Association of State Universities
and Land-Grant Colleges in Washington,
has been appointed to the new position
of vice-president for public affairs at the
University.
The appointment of Mr. Crawford to
direct one of the key administrative
divisions at the University was announced
Saturday, January 10, by President Edgar
F. Shannon, Jr. Mr. Crawford will assume
his duties here February 1.
As one of five vice presidents, Mr.
Crawford will report directly to President
Shannon and will, as directed, represent
the president and the Board of Visitors in
matters affecting external relations of the
University with the public.
The division Mr. Crawford will head will
include the office responsible for University-wide
development and with responsibility for
coordinating all existing and future fund raising
on behalf of the University. He will also have
responsibility for the University's relations with
local, State, and Federal governments, relations
with alumni organizations and the public
relations aspects of the University's public
service activities.
William A. Hobbs, former Director of
Development and Public Affairs, resigned from
his post effective December 31.
A former member of the Board of Visitors,
Mr. Hobbs served in the director's post from
the time of its creation in 1967. He left the
University to assume the presidency of Capital
Trinity Fund, Inc.

The Director of University Relations, who
previously reported to the Director of Development
and Public Affairs, will report to the vice
president for public affairs. The Director of
Information Services has been promoted to a
level where he also will hereafter report directly
to the vice president. A new position of
director of development has been established
but not yet filled. He also will be directly
responsible to the vice president.
"Mr. Crawford's outstanding leadership in
the national association, his success in obtaining
funds from foundations and corporations for its
special programs, and his previous experience in
working with the Commission on Goals for
Higher Education in the South as an executive
associate of the Southern Regional Education
Board equip him well for this important new
position at the University," President Shannon
said.
