In a meeting held in Newcomb Hall last
night, the Virginia Progressive Party, which sent
four of its candidates to the Student Council in
last spring's elections, elected new party
officers and set up the procedures for
nominating candidates to run in this fall's
Student Council elections.

The forty attending members of the party
elected Stu Pape, a fourth-year man, as
President and Ken Lewis, a third-year man, as
Vice-President. Andy Potler, a second-year man
in the College, was elected Secretary and the
new party treasurer is Jon Miller, a fourth-year
man.

The party also set up the party organizational
structure at the meeting. Three standing
committees were set up: a Platform Committee,
a Membership Committee, and a Publicity
Committee.

Steering Committee

A Steering Committee was established,
consisting of the officers, the committee
chairmen, two party members, the party
members on the Student Council, and the past
president of the party.

The VPP also agreed upon procedures for
nominating candidates for the Student Council
election this fall. At an open meeting in early
November, any person who wants to run for
one of the four Council seats that will be open
for election would tell the steering committee
of his desire.

The steering committee would then interview
all candidates and recommend "about
eight names" to the party as a whole, and the
party membership would select four of these
people to run for the Council seats.

Jefferson Party

In a response to a question concerning the
newly formed Jefferson Party, a party spokesman
stated that "We are most pleased to see the
formation of a party designed to provide a
conservative alternative here at the University."
