Seven Enter Council Race
In Grad School Re-Run
By Pete Shea
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Seven candidates have signed up
to run for Student Council in the
second Graduate School of Arts
and Sciences elections.
The original graduate school
voting was declared null and void
by the Student Council after several
charges of unfair campaign practises
were raised. The Council threw out
the first results after Councilman
Kevin Mannix revealed that the
failure of some of the candidates to
hand in their petitions before the
deadline made the entire election
unconstitutional.
The graduate students will elect
two representatives to the Council
who will serve full-year terms and
one who will serve a special
one-semester term. The latter post
was created when the Council
membership was increased to give
the individual schools more accurate
representation on the council.
Candidates
The candidates for the special
term are Robert L. Burke and Bud
Ogle. Mr. Ogle was the unopposed
winner in the invalidated election.
There are five candidates running
for the two regular positions.
They are Judy Allen, Sue Ford,
Brian Hampton, Jim Roebuck and
Thurmond Wenzl. Mr. Roebuck and
Mr. Wenzl were the winners in the
first vote, while Miss Ford was the
only other candidate in that election.
Elections will also be held to fill
the School's executive offices. Bill
Crawley and Charles Finn are vying
for the presidency and J. Gregory
Lynch and R. Carter Morris are the
candidates for vice-president. Mr.
Crawley and Mr. Morris were the
victors in their races in the first
elections but both resigned after
urging that a re-run be held for the
Council elections.
John Hopewell should be elected
secretary as he is running
unopposed. The elections will be
held together with the College
elections on May 13 and 14. The
same ballot boxes will be used for
both elections but the ballots will
be colored differently, to avoid
confusion. Polling places will be
open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both
days.
Statement
Meanwhile, Mr. Mannix announced
that a statement will be
placed by each ballot box informing
the voters that it would be an
honor offense to cast more than
one ballot in any given election. Mr.
Mannix said that, although this
ruling has always been in effect, it
was decided that an official clarification
was needed.
Mr. Mannix also said that
absentee ballots will be allowed in
both elections. Anyone who will be
away for official or educational
business may pick up a ballot in the
Student Government office and
must return it by 3 p.m. Wednesday.
He will also be required to
submit a statement telling why he
was away and pledging that he has
only voted once.
Special Forum
A forum of all the candidates
for Student Council from the
College will be held on Wednesday,
May 7. All 15 men are supposed to
appear at the meeting that will be
held in Gilmer Hall at 8 p.m.
Representatives of Rapier, the Virginia
Weekly, UVM, WTJU, WUVA
and The Cavalier Daily will be
present to ask the candidates
questions.
