University Party Endorses
New Party Following Debate

After initially refusing its support
to the New Party, the
University Party, faced with a
shortage of acceptable candidates
within its own membership, nominated
no one for Student Council
but endorsed the five- man slate of
the New Party.

Such a move, said Keven
Mannix, would prove to be suicide
for the University Party.

Formed last week, the New
Party is running Charles Murdock,
Al Sinesky, Tom Gardner, Paul
Bishop, and Buzzy Waitzkin.

Despite fears expressed by Ron
Cass and Pieter Schenkkan that a
separate University Party slate
would splinter the liberal vote and
insure the election of the conservative
caucus candidates, the old
party still decided to nominate men
from its own ranks after it first
denied its support to the New Party
by a vote of 35-41.

However, when all three potential
nominees were voted unacceptable
to the membership, the New
Party slate was endorsed by a vote
of 40-28.

Kevin Mannix objected in noting
that two of the four University
Party members now on Student
Council are fraternity men.

In supporting the New- Party
former University Party president
Randy Ross claimed that the
supporting base of the old party did
not include enough of the various
elements of the community to be
victorious.

When it seemed to many members
that the New Party was forcing
a surprise power play on the old
party, Charles Murdock volunteered
to withdraw the New Party from
consideration.
