University of Virginia Library

Highest Rating Ever
Given To CD By ACP

An evaluation by the Associated
College Press (ACP) has given The
Cavalier Daily the highest rating the
newspaper has ever received.

The University newspaper
scored 3,580 points out of a
possible 4,000 and was awarded a
First Class honor rating for its
achievements during the first semester
of the current academic year.
This rating shows that The Cavalier
Daily compares favorably with
other papers in its classification as a
daily paper of a four-year college.

The ACP rating was broken
down into various categories such
as content, coverage and physical
properties. Under these categories,
the performance of the individual
departments was also evaluated.

Last semester, the Sports and
News departments led the overall
improvement. The News department's
rating increased 110 points
to an all-time high of 730 out of
850. The Sports department scored
280 points with the highest rating
being 300.

Following guidelines of news
sources, balance, and creativity, the
ACP rated The Cavalier Daily's
coverage of the University news
field as excellent, giving it 770 of
800 possible points. The format
and make-up of the Sports and
News pages both were judged to be
near excellent, scoring 430 of 450
points. However, the make-up of
the other two pages fell quite short
of the 300 point total, scoring only
160.
