By Stefan Lopatkiewiez

Three awards were garnered by
the University Young Republican
Club at the 1969 convention of the
Young Republican Federation of
Virginia, which met over the
weekend in
Richmond.
At the convention's Saturday
night banquet at the John Marshall
Hotel, the University's club was
honored as the Best Young
Republican Club of the year in
Virginia. In addition, Anson
Franklin, the club's executive
secretary, was named Best
Individual Young Republican in the
state, and the club's publication,
"The University Republican," was
selected as the federation's Best
News Letter.
New Chairman
Paul Scott, a member of the
University law school's Young
Republican Club, was elected
chairman of the College Republican
Federation of Virginia, a subsidiary
organization within the state's
Young Republican Federation, at
its convention on Sunday.
Also elected were Marty Blair of
Mary Washington College, as the
College Federation's first
vice-chairman; Carl Schone of the
University of Richmond, as second
vice-chairman; Judy White of
Madison, as secretary; and Don
Johnson of Virginia Tech, as
treasurer.
In addition, Mike Tarrant of
Arlington, a former student at the
University, narrowly defeated
Sandy Scholte of Henrico County,
to become the new chairman of the
Young Republican Federation of
Virginia.
The University Young
Republican Club has a membership
of 620 students, over 50 per cent
more than last year, and sent the
largest delegation to the state
convention, with 63 votes. The club
played an active role in last year's
national campaign, inaugurating its
effort by sponsoring campaign
workshops, which were attended by
Republicans from all over the state,
in both the spring and fall.
Fall Campaign
At the beginning of last
semester, the club was put in charge
of the party's campaign in
Charlottesville's Recreation
Precinct, the largest precinct in
Virginia's Seventh Congressional
District. On Election Day, the
University Young Republicans
distributed 150 students
throughout the Charlottesville-Albemarle
area to man polls and
distribute literature, and topped its
established goal by drawing out
1,100 votes for Richard Nixon in
Recreation Precinct.
Earlier in the campaign, the club
had joined the University Young
Democrats in conducting a mock
presidential election.
City Work
In addition, it contributed
financially to the campaign of
"Pete" Giesen for Congressman
from the Seventh District, and, for
its efforts, was given a permanent
vote on the Charlottesville
Republican Committee.
Mr. Franklin has been a member
of the University's club for four
years, and was in charge of the
club's work in the presidential
campaign. He served as precinct
captain in the successful Recreation
Precinct drive, and, together with
Rick Brownfield, directs the
publication of the club's news
letter.
