First-Year Committee
Discusses Liberalized
Car, Parietal Motions

Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Cars for first-year men, women
in the first-year dorms, and a seat
for a first-year representative on the
Student Council all became possibilities
for first-year men during the
second meeting of the First-Year
Committee.
The meeting, which was held in
room 4B of Newcomb Hall on
Monday night, began with an important,
15 minute discussion on
the definition and use of a 'point of
order.'
When this debate finally began
to bog down, the chairman of the
committee, Scott Saunders, dismissed
the whole thing by saying,
"Let's not discuss picayune
matters."
Moving on to new business, the
chair recognized Buzzy Waitzkin,
chairman of the ad hoc committee,
who explained the purpose of the
'Open Board of Visitors Petition'
and asked that the First-Year Committee
pass a resolution stating its
support of the petition. Such a
motion was made and was passed
unanimously.
Chester Titus
In response to a letter from
Chester Titus, Director of the Department
of Housing, requesting
the First-Year Committee to give its
opinion concerning the issue of
allowing male guests in the dormitories
during the week, the committee
passed a motion to answer
Mr. Titus' letter by saying that the
committee did support the idea of
allowing first-year men to have
male guests during the week.
The Girls in Dorms Committee
next made the motion that it be
allowed to draw up a referendum
about the presence of women in the
McCormick and Alderman Road
Dormitories. The motion passed.
This referendum, it was later
explained, will take the form of a
poll that will be circulated within
the next few weeks to all first-year
