Drewery Brown Speaks To Rural High School Students As Vaden Shields Looks On

Three-Day Conference Held At The University To Show Advantages To Attending College In Virginia

Yesterday, students from seven
nearby rural high schools attended
the third day of speeches and discussion
intended to convince them
to seek higher education in Virginia.

The three-day conference, sponsored
by the Virginia Association of
Student Governments, was arranged
by Alan Rudlin, chairman of the
Student Council's High School
Orientation Committee.

Mr. Rudlin pointed out that the
percentage of high school graduates
who attend college in their own
state is 50 percent. This percentage
for the South is 34 percent. In
Virginia only 30 percent of the
state's high school graduates who
go on to college attend a school in
the state.

The problem with this, Mr.
Rudlin said, is that the students
who attend colleges and universities
outside Virginia often seek employment
outside Virginia when they
graduate. Hence, there is a smaller
number of college graduates seeking
employment in Virginia.

Besides showing the high school
students the advantages of obtaining
higher education in Virginia.

Drewery Brown, a local Youth
Corps worker, gave a talk yesterday
in the chemistry auditorium urging
the students to further their education.
