University To Publish
Catalogue On Books
In Faulkner Collection
A catalogue to the world's
largest collection of William
Faulkner materials will be
published Wednesday, Sept. 25, by
the University Press of Virginia.
"William Faulkner, 'Man
Working,' 1919-1962" is a record
of the William Faulkner collections
at the Alderman Library.
The Wednesday publication date
observes the birthday of Faulkner
who was born in 1897. The author
was at the University from 1956
until his death in 1962, first as
writer-in-residence, then as
honorary consultant and lecturer. In
1959 Faulkner deposited his
manuscripts with the Library and
since his death the Faulkner family
and Faulkner Foundation have
arranged for the continued deposit
of these manuscripts.
The 250-page volume was
compiled by Linton R. Massey of
Keswick, Virginia, president of the
Bibliographical Society of the
University of Virginia. Massey, who
was a friend of Faulkner's has
collected the greater part of the
Faulkner material deposited at the
Alderman Library. Mr. Massey
began collecting Faulkner in the
1930's. In 1960 he gave the fir
large portion of the collection to
the Alderman Library.
The general attempt has been
made to gather everything by or
about Faulkner for the collection.
In the future Mr. Massey will
continue to add new material to the
collection as it becomes
available "While not a
bibliography, this catalogue is the
most comprehensive and complete
record available today of William
Faulkner's published work and
other papers," says the publisher.
"Included are first editions of
Faulkner's novel, essays, poems
and stories published in English, as
well as in many foreign languages.
The catalogue also lists articles,
interviews, public addresses, letters,
recordings, manuscripts and
drawings."
