Upward Bound Pupils
Enjoy College Success

Of the 49 high school students
who entered the Upward Bound
program last summer at the
University, 43 have been accepted
by colleges or universities and will
enter this fall.

Most of those have returned this
summer as "bridge" students for
their final eight-week session of
Upward Bound residence study at
the University.

Upward Bound, a pre-college
program for students with deficient
academic and economic
backgrounds, is beginning its
second year at the University.

John Withrow, a graduate
instructor at the University, has
been named director of the
program. Mr. Withrow, who is
working on his doctorate in
education, attended Lynchburg
College and has taught in the
Lynchburg and Amherst County
schools.

Steve Waters is associate
director of Upward Bound at the
University. This summer the
expanded program includes 31
incoming students who have
completed their sophomore year of
high school. They will study
language, mathematics and social
studies during their eight weeks at
the University, and return on
alternate Saturdays throughout
next year for special tutoring.

In addition to academic studies,
the summer schedule includes
special workshop projects
throughout the University, athletic
programs and cultural activities.

Students who entered the
program last summer are entering
schools ranging from junior colleges
to universities in the Southeast,
East and Middle West. Sixty per
cent of the students will receive
some sort of financial aid such as
student work-plan participation.

Upward Bound, which is
sponsored by the Office of
Economic Opportunity, serves
students from high schools in
Charlottesville and the counties of
Albemarle, Buckingham, Fluvanna,
Greene, Louisa, Cumberland,
Nelson and Prince Edward.
