SSOC Encourages
Classroom 'Strike'
To protest "the war, racial oppression,
and the draft," the
Southern Student Organizing
Committee is calling for all students
and faculty members to
boycott classes today.
The one-day strike is part of
the "Ten Days" of civil rights
and anti-war activity being sponsored
by the SSOC April 21
through 30.
The SSOC has also called a
rally for strikers to be held this
afternoon at 3 in the amphitheater.
The student strike is being encouraged
nationally by such
"New Left" groups as Students
for a Democratic Society and
the Student Non-violent Coordinating
Committee in addition to
the SSOC.
Activities at the University
and across the nation are "in
line with the world-wide student
strike" scheduled for today, a
member of the SSOC told The
Cavalier Daily yesterday. Leftist
youth groups throughout the
world, especially in Western Europe,
have called for the strike.
The SSOC announced the
strike via dozens of mimeographed
signs posted around the
Grounds this week. Student reaction
to the idea was diverse,
though a general feeling of
apathy seemed to outweigh either
favorable or unfavorable reactions.
"I may go to class Friday; I
may not," said one student, "but
it's like that everyday."
The Cavalier Daily was unable
to ascertain how many professors
would cancel classes today
in sympathy with the strike.
