Relations Council
To Hold Meeting

New life will be given to the
now defunct Thomas Jefferson
Chapter of the Virginia Council
on Human Relations at the University
with an organizational
meeting to be held tomorrow at
8 p.m. in Maury Hall Auditorium.

Renamed the Martin Luther
King, Jr., chapter in honor of
the slain civil rights leader, the
organization is designed to bring
together all members of the University
community who are concerned
about racism and the inequities
faced by the University.
Faculty, administrators and employees
of the University are encouraged
to join.

The former Thomas Jefferson
Chapter, initially formed in 1961
at the height of the "Sit-in"
movement, faded from existence
during the early months of the
Vietnam war when concern
shifted from civil rights to peace.
"But Martin's death made many
of us take stock and look close
around us once again."

"Looking at our University we
are again shocked and appalled
at what we see," declared temporary
chapter president Robert
E. Yuhnke.

Permanent offices for 1968-69
will be elected at tomorrow's
meeting. Later the steering committee
will present suggestions for
action and discuss the problems
facing Negro students and employees
as well as the University
officials failure to act on these
problems.

Yuhnke warned that the organization
will demonstrate if the
University refuses to act to
eliminate discriminatory practices,"
and "will march until the
legitimate demands of Negroes
have been met."
