Singers To Perform
Variety Of Selections
In Repertory Concert
Under the direction of Donald
Loach for the first time, the
University Singers will present a
repertory concert in Cabell Hall
Auditorium at 8:30 this evening.
Planning a program of music
that has both unity and variety
is no mean task according to
Mr. Loach. "Once I have decided
what pieces to perform,"
he says, "I still have to rearrange
the program several times before
I finally hear how it works best."
During the second half of the
concert the Singers will perform
two contrasting groups. The first
group, comprising three choral
songs by the French composer,
Maurice Ravel, is followed by
five songs by German composer
Johannes Brahms.
Brahm's songs are mainly love
lyrics while Ravel's are chiefly
comic and include a humorous
retelling of "Little Red Riding
Hood."
In the first half of the program,
compositions in other styles
will fall under the general theme
of "Salve Regina," which is a
medieval evening hymn used by
many composers.
Violinists Anne Rodig and
Nancy Kinnear will play in Scarlatti's
"Salve Regina," while oboists
Richard Manson and Robert
Lehmeyer will perform another
Baroque work by Schuetz.
Elizabeth Brydon, Judith Holdaway,
Randolph Bean, and Richard
Patterson will sing solos.
Yvaine Duisit, regular accompanist
for the Singers, will play
harpsichord. A graduate of the
Paris Conservatory, Mrs. Duisit
is well-known as a concert organist
on the west coast where she
has lived until recently.
For the concluding work the
Singers will be joined by the University
Glee Club and members
of the University Band. In order
to perform the final work properly,
the performers will be stationed
at various places throughout
the auditorium, producing a
live stereophonic effect.
Tickets for the concert may be
obtained at Hi-Fi House, Mincers',
Newcomb Hall, and at the
door.
