Library Adopts Simpler System
For Book-Checking Procedures

By Tom Adams
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Implementation of a new
automated circulation system in
Alderman Library will begin on
February 5.

Under this system each borrower
will be given a plastic
identification card with his name
and social security number embossed
on it. The borrower will
give the staff member at the circulation
desk this ID card and
the books which he wishes to
charge out.

Two-Part Card

The staff member will write
the book's call number on a
two-part charge-discharge card
with a carbon in between and
will then, using the borrower's
ID card, imprint the borrower's
name, social security number,
and the date-due on the two-part
card. After the cards are separated,
the discharge card, with
the date-due stamped on it, will
be inserted in the book and the
book may then be taken from
the library.

Door Check System

Under the new door check
system, it is this visible slip that
will indicate to the checker at the
door that the materials have
been checked out.

The charge part of the card
will be keypunched at a later
time and entered into the automated
system from which printouts
of the books in circulation,
computer printed overdue notices,
and statistics of library use will
be produced.

Beginning February 1, the
plastic identification cards will
be handed out at the circulation
desk to all borrowers.

The loan period for students
and staff under the new system
will be a minimum of four weeks
and a maximum of five weeks.
