Al Hirt's 'All-Star Show' Appears Tonight

illustration

Three hundred pounds of jazz trumpeter
comes to University Hall tonight in a concert
with Al Hirt and his "all-star show."

Mr. Hirt, veteran of sixteen albums and
numerous sellout concerts, brings to the
University the sound of "New Orleans jazz,"
the same music style heard by tourists on
Bourbon Street at his own club.

The concert, sponsored by the Alumni
for the Virginia Student Aid Foundation,
will begin at 8 p.m.

Born in New Orleans, Mr. Hirt over the
years has acquired a background of classical,
dixieland, and jazz music that has
melded into the style he today calls "pop
commercial."

In addition, he has studied music at the
Conservatory of Cincinnati, and toured
with numerous bands, notably the Dorsey
brothers.

Mr. Hirt's career received its biggest boost
in 1954, when he acquired the Pier 600 club
in New Orleans, which he renamed Al
Hirt's Place.

Since then, he has been awarded an
artist of the year award, won two disc
jockey polls as best instrumentalist, and
won four gold records for singles "Java,"
"Cotton Candy." "Honey in the Horn," and
"Sugar Lips."

As of last night, tickets were still available
for the concert. They may be purchased
at Mincer's, Newcomb Hall, University
Hall, or Alumni Hall for $3 unreserved
and $4 reserved.
