Committee Suggests
Food Services Change

By LIBBY WITHERS

A recommendation to
establish a contract between
Food Services and meal ticket
purchasers, detailing what
services will be provided, next
year headed the list proposals
discussed yesterday by the
Food Services Committee.

The proposal, presented by
Student Council President-elect
Larry Sabato, is designed to
prevent the risk of cutbacks in
Food Services provisions that
this year's patrons experienced:

Civil Engineering Prof.
Henry L. Kinnier, Food Services
Committee chairman, met with
Food Services Director Bernard
C. Fontana Monday and said
the he feels Mr. Fontana
"agrees in principle" with the
recommendation.

Mr. Kinnier asked that
Council talk to Mr. Fontana
about the contract and to
request its implementation this
summer along with mailings to
students and their parents.

Agreeable Improvements

He also said he felt the need
for leeway in the contract in
order to make improvements
agreeable to students, such as
the installation last year of a
salad bar.

Mr. Sabato stressed the
contract "must be very explicit
and implemented next year if
possible."

Concerning student
employee dissatisfaction, Mr.
Kinnier said Mr. Fontana also
agreed that in the future all job
positions must be spelled out
in detail and that a specified
period should be set up each
week for student employees to
voice grievances and to offer
suggestions to the cafeteria
manager.

Mr. Kinnier said there are
no plans to reduce the number
of student employees next
year.

The Food Services manager
position, vacated this year, will
not be filled until September
when an experienced man
transferring from a similar
university situation will replace
the past manager.

Many of the grievances and
problems this year were caused
by this vacancy and lack of
management, Mr. Kinnier.

Right Track

"I think things will turn
around with this new
organization," he said. "Mr.
Fontana wants to do it right
and I think we're on the right
track."

The committee discussed
the importance of a student
organization to provide a
buffer between student
employees and management.

Committee member Taylor
Putney stated that the
organization of managers,
assistants and supervisors is
"essential for incentive to work
for promotions."

"There should be some
agreement to keep up espirit de
corps among the employees;
we need a situation they can be
happy in," Mr. Kinnier said.
