Cross Begins Program
Faculty Dean Robert D.
Cross told Arts and Science
faculty members Thursday that
he "hopes to have a series of
quasi-formal meetings this
year" so that faculty members
can discuss the character and
direction of our liberal arts
program."
Mr. Cross announced the
first meeting at the Colonnade
Club at 5:15 p.m. Thursday.
Admissions Dean Ernest H. Ern
will talk on admissions and will
discuss the "pool of applicants
from which we draw, what we
look for, and what we expect
of them."
"I think he will speak briefly
and will concentrate more on
the principles than on the very
complicated techniques of
selection," Mr. Cross
explained. "Most of us, I
suspect, don't know very much
about who considers coming to
the University, or what they
bring with them, in background
and aspiration, achievement
and need (felt or perceived),"
he continued.
The faculty adopted a
memorial resolution on History
Prof. Emeritus Thomas Cary
Johnson, who died Oct. 18 at
76. Mr. Johnson, a former
history department chariman,
retired from University
teaching in 1967 after a long
and distinguished career.
Buckley Awarded
College second-yearman
John S. Buckley was named
outstanding Virginia YAF
leader at the annual Freedom
Awards Banquet of Virginia
Young Americans for Freedom
Friday night at the John
Marshall Hotel in Richmond.
A crowd of 200, honoring
Freedom Award Recipient and
retiring Democratic
Congressman, Watkins M.
Abbitt, also heard Virginia
Senator Harry F. Byrd, Jr.
praise the YAF members for
their "devotion to the cause of
individual freedom."
In a highly significant
reference to the upcoming
Virginia gubernatorial
election, Mr. Byrd commented
on the presence at the dinner
of both Mr. Abbitt, a former
Democratic Party State
Chairman, and Richard
Obenshain, current State
Republican Party head,
declaring that in '73, "perhaps
the twain shall meet." The
speculation is that Mr. Byrd is
preparing the groundwork for
an endorsement of former
Democratic Governor, Mills O.
Godwin, as a Republican
candidate.
