News In Brief

Court Extends Drug Trial

Judge Allan N. Spitzer ruled
yesterday morning in
Municipal Court for a
continuance of the trial
involving five University
students arrested Nov. 2 and
charged with possession of
marijuana.

The trial for first-year man
John Everson will be heard
Dec. 12. Three other first-year
students, Valerie Holmes,
James Carswell and Wayne
DeBlois will appear together
Dec. 19. First-year student
Susan Covey, who is
represented by a private
attorney, will be heard in late
December or earlier next year.

Citing the "hardships a
continuance would place upon
the students involved with
classes and exams," Student
Atty. Edward L. Hogshire
requested that the cases of the
four students he is representing
be heard separately.

The continuance is due to a
legal stipulation that "the
chemist's report to be
amenable must be filed for a
period of no less that seven
days before the hearing."
Apparently, the report in this
case had only been on record
for five days.

Commonwealth Atty. John
T. Camblos, who brought the
legal requirement to the
attention of the court, gave no
reason why the report had
not been filed earlier.

Yesterday The Cavalier
Daily erroneously reported
that tickets for the Dec. 8

Newcomb Hall and only to
University students. Tickets are
now for sale to the public at

and at the main desk of
Newcomb Hall for $3.50.
