Squire Abandons Suspension Plea,
Plans Appeal To Higher Court

By PAT GRANEY

A motion calling for the
suspension of sentence for
defendant Steve Squire was
withdrawn yesterday during an
informal meeting of Mr.
Squire's attorneys with
Commonwealth Atty. John T.
Camblos and Judge George M.
Coles at the Charlottesville
Corporation Court.

The action to abandon the
motion resulted from his
attorney's decision to appeal
Mr. Squire's case to the State
Supreme Court.

"Since we had decided to
appeal our case to the Supreme
Court," Atty. F. Guthrie
Gordon explained, "we felt the
court would not look favorably
upon this suspension".

Mr. Gordon indicated that
this cancellation is "a normal
procedure when an appeal is
pending."

Although there has been
some speculation as to whether
sufficient funds for an appeal
could be raised, Mr. Gordon
indicated that there appeared
to be no further difficulty and
the funds were forthcoming.

The attorneys have four
months from day of final
judgment to file papers to the
State Supreme Court. Mr.
Gordon said the case would
probably not be heard for a
year. During this time Mr.
Squire is out on $1000
property bond.

Mr. Squire was convicted by
a five-person Corporation
Court jury on Oct. 13 for
disorderly conduct stemming
from an anti-war
demonstration at Scott
Stadium last April 29. The jury
imposed a $600 fine and a four
month jail sentence on the
31-year-old defendant.

Mr. Squire was originally
convicted in Municipal Court
May 11, and sentenced by
Judge E.C. Wingfield to six
months in jail (suspended on
condition of 12 months good
behavior), fined $25 and
released on $250 property
bond.
