Chess Tournament Ends

The Fifth Annual University
of Virginia Open Chess
Tournament concluded
yesterday in Newcomb Hall
Ballroom. Sponsored by the
University Chess Club, the
three-day, six-round event
attracted 65 players from
several states and abroad.
Three chess masters, H.M.T.
Krabbe of the Netherlands,
Virginia state champion
Charles Powell from
Richmond, and Dennis
Strenzwilk from Maryland,
finished the tournament. A
fourth, Edward Kitces of
Richmond, withdrew after four
rounds when he had lost one
game and drawn another
playing lower ranked
University students. Expert
William Hook, former Olympic
chess team captain from the
Virgin Islands, was also among
the contestants.
A prize of $400 was
split between five players, all
tied for first place. The rank
among the first-place winners
was decided by tie-breaks First
place went to H.T.M. Krabbe,
second to William Hook, third
to Matthew Cushing, a
first-year man, fourth to David
Robson, and fifth to Harry
Judy.
Dick Dickey, Greene
County Commonwealth's
Attorney and University
alumnus, guaranteed the total
$650 in prize money: Entry
fees, however, paid the total
cost.
"Due to the Spassky-Fisher
match," Mr. Saavedra
continued, "the number of
tournaments has proliferated.
