Woman Convicted
For Peabody Fire

By MARGARET ALFORD

Annie L. White, 32,
received a three-year suspended
jail sentence in Charlottesville
Corporation Court Monday
after pleading guilty to a
charge of "feloniously and
maliciously setting fire" to
Peabody Hall Jan. 19.

City Commonwealth's
Atty. John T. Camblos
suggested the three-year
sentence with immediate
parole for Mrs. White, since she
is a first-time offender, is
married and has three children.
Mr. Camblos also said Mrs.
White did not appear to be
attempting to harm anyone or
make any personal gain by the
arson.

He said she has
"accumulated mental,
personal, and emotional
problems." Investigators could
not find any motive for her
act, and apparently she was
just "mad at the world," he
added.

Corporation Court Judge
George M. Coles accepted Mr.
Camblos' recommendation and
sentenced Mrs. White to three
years in the state penitentiary,
putting her on two years'
parole effective immediately.
Maximum sentence for arson is
15 years in the penitentiary.

Buildings and Grounds
Director H. I. Taylor estimated
damage to the structure at
about $26,000. The main and
second floors suffered
extensive smoke damage,
according to Mr. Taylor, as
well as widespread water and
heat damage to the plaster.

Mrs. White was arrested and
jailed on an arson charge Jan.
24.
