University To Open Construction Bids
For Lambeth Field Apartment Housing

By PAT GRANEY

Bids will be opened Feb. 27
for construction of housing for
980 students at Lambeth Field
near Carr's Hill. The University
began seeking bids for the
project last week.

Housing will take the form
of two-and three-bedroom
apartments. These units will be
placed in structures varying in
size from three-and
four-stories. However, the
plans also provide for the
construction of one 12-story
building housing about 220
students.

Construction of the first
phase of the project, which will
house 460 students, is
expected to begin in March,
and to be completed in August
1974.

The second phase of
construction is expected to
begin in September 1974.

The Lambeth housing has
been approved by the
student-faculty Lambeth Field
Committee and the
University's Board of Visitors.

Access to the Lambeth
Field area will be from Emmet
Street at the Massie Road
intersection.

Spur Road

According to University
planners, the University will
also construct a spur road from
the Lambeth access route to
the rear of University Gardens
so that persons residing in
those areas will have better and
safer access to Emmet Street
than they now have.

A service road with an
electric gate will run along the
north side of the tract from the
main access to University Way.
This will only be used for the
University shuttle bus and
appropriate service vehicles.

During construction a
temporary access road will
enter the site from Emmet
Street just north of the C&O
Railroad tracks.

Architects Named

Architects for the project
are Rawlings, Wilson and
Fraher of Richmond, and
Kenneth DeMay of Sasaki,
Dawson and DeMay Associates,
Inc., Watertown, Mass.

Plans will include a
commons building with
meeting rooms, a snack bar,
laundry facilities, and small
shops for books and sundry
items.

The buildings will be placed
in an L-shaped pattern, in two
parallel rows. Between the two
rows, a "pedestrian street" will
be constructed for use by
residents and emergency
vehicles.

Interior Design

All apartments, will have the
same basic interior design. In
addition to the bedrooms, each
unit will have a kitchen, living
room, dining room and one
and a half or two bathrooms

depending on the size of the
apartment.

Existing environmental
aspects of the 16-acre site will
be preserved.

Additional plantings will be
placed along the edges of the
tract to decrease noise and
visibility of passing trains.
Plantings will also be preserved
in strategic areas along the
northwest corner and the north
border of the site to act as
buffers for adjacent
commercial and residential
areas.
