Council Asks
Class Break
For Election

To facilitate student
participation in election day
activities Student Council has
requested University President
Edgar. F. Shannon and the
Deans of all the schools to
suspend all classes on
Nov. 7.
Council Vice-President
Larry Sabato, who presented
the proposal to Council, said
that he sought the suspension
of classes since there are so
many people involved in
balloting in the national
elections.
"More than 75 per cent of
the students who have
registered have said they plan
to vote and the percentage of
students registered is reaching
60 per cent," Mr. Sabato
commented.
"It is the responsibility of
this University to do
everything possible to make
students aware of the
important privilege of voting,"
Mr. Sabato said.
He pointed out that the day
off would enable the majority
of the University which lives
within a one-day travel radius
of Charlottesville to avoid the
complications of obtaining an
absentee ballot by voting
person at their local precincts.
"Many students who live
outside a one-day travel radius
of Charlottesville can be
utilized by local party
organizations at the polls and
elsewhere on election day,"
Mr. Sabato added.
