Shannon Makes Public Report
On Future Growth Projections

By BEVERLY DOWELL

President Edgar F. Shannon Jr.
yesterday officially released the Future of
the University Committee report on
growth projections for the next decade
following much controversy concerning
its premature release by Ken Ross, a
student member of the committee.

The committee voted on the report
Monday evening after asking Mr. Ross to
leave. Mr. Ross voted against the report.

After the committee voted, the report
was sent directly to President Shannon.

According to committee secretary
Ralph Eisenberg, there were "no major
substantive changes" between the official
report and the preliminary one released
by Mr. Ross.

"There were some changes in
phraseology which may have changed the
thrust slightly," Mr. Eisenberg said.

President Shannon has not yet released
a statement concerning the report. Three
other student members voted for the 63
page report with reservations. Phil
Kimball, Larry Sabato and Jacquelin
Mason issued an "additional statement."

They expressed reservations
"concerning one particular
recommendation: the Committee's
preference for Plan A (head count 16,054)
over Plan B (head count 15,091)."

"We are not convinced by the
'academic excellence' argument; we do
not feel that the argument is cogent
enough to force an absorption of another
955 FTE students by the University and
surrounding community," the students'
statement continued.

The student members added, "We
must not forget that these students will
place additional strain on the capacity of
housing, traffic and other facilities."
