Rallies Back
Jail Reform

By RICHARD PETTY

Demonstrations will protest prison
conditions in five rallies to be held
tomorrow in various parts of the nation.

The demonstrations will coincide with
the October 2 presidential elections in
South Vietnam.

The Charlottesville Draft Resistance
will participate in a protest at the
Women's Federal Prison in Alderson, West
Virginia, at 1 p.m.

The other rallies will be held in San
Quentin; Los Angeles; Springfield Missouri;
and Danbury, Connecticut.

Mr. Charlie Finn of the Draft Resistance
said the purpose of the rallies is to protest
"conditions in prisons and the use of prisoners
both in the United States and in South
Vietnam."

The rally at Alderson is part of a fall
campaign by the Draft Resistance to draw
national attention to the need for prison
reform.

Mr. Finn stated he felt that most people
were not aware of the inequities of the prison
system, and he emphasized the need for a
change in social attitudes.

The Charlottesville Draft Resistance is an
independent group formed three years ago in
opposition to the draft.

The group, consisting mostly of students,
has recently expanded its activities to include
prison reform and tax resistance.

Future plans include films on the draft and
the war in Vietnam and the distribution of
information regarding fall activities.

Representatives of the group will speak to
interested students on the second floor of
Newcomb Hall between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30
p.m. Monday through Friday.
