Local Committee Sponsors Free-Davis Rally

The newly-formed Charlottesville
Defense Committee will sponsor a rally in
support of freedom for Angela Davis and
all other political prisoners tomorrow at 8
p.m. in Newcomb Hall Ballroom.

Angela Davis, a member of the
Communist party and former philosophy
professor at UCLA, is currently awaiting
trial for her alleged participation in an
armed attempt to free three black
prisoners from the Marin County
Courthouse in San Rafael, California on
August 7, 1970.

Ella Baker, a member of the Angela
Davis Defense Committee, will be the
main speaker. She has worked for civil rights
and consumer protection and served as a
coordinator of the Southern Christian
Leadership Conference under Martin Luther
King. As head of the New York branch of the
NAACP, she led the first mass demonstration of
parents for quality integrated education.

Other speakers at the rally will be Steve
Frazier of the Philadelphia Labor Committee,
who has been accused of conspiring in a bomb
plot, and a member of the Black Panther party,
who will discuss the Bobby Seale trial and
several Charlottesville cases.

The Charlottesville Defense Committee,
which is sponsoring the rally, is an organization
of Charlottesville citizens and members of the
University community whose purpose is to
"publicly expose and organize opposition to
both national and local cases of political
repression."

The Committee was formed about a month
ago and currently consists of about 30
members, of which less than half are University
students. The organization was inspired by the
Angela Davis and Bobby Seale cases on the
national level and several local cases.

Activities planned for the future include
court watching and distribution of information
on legal rights.
