Three Faculty
Publish Books
In Two Fields

Three professors at the
University have recently published books
in the field of history and English. They
are Oron J. Hale, Professor of History;
Donald Jackson, professor of history; and
Fredson Bowers, Linden Kent Professor
of English.

Mr. Hale's book is entitled "The Great
Illusion: 1900-1914". His book is part of
a 20-volume series in which the rise of
modern Europe is analyzed. Mr.
Hale's book discusses the people, culture,
science, and politics of Europe.

Mr. Hale is an expert in the areas of
diplomatic and military history and is a past
chairman of the American Historical
Association Committee on War Documents.
The Committee has microfilmed over 10
million captured German documents in the
years preceding and during World War II.

He served with the United States High
Commission for Germany in 1950-1952 and
was commissioner for Bavaria in 1951-1952.

Mr. Jackson along with Mary Lee Spence, a
former instructor at Pennsylvania State
University, has published volume I of "The
Expeditions of John Charles Fremont".
Volume I, being published by the University of
Illinois Press, is a collection of Fremont's
personal and public papers relating to his travels
from 1838 to 1844.

Volumes II and III will be published over
the next several years and will include
documents covering Fremont's expeditions in
California, his seven weeks as governor of
California, and other political and business
affairs.

Mr. Jackson is the editor of "The Papers of
George Washington", a multi-volume project
sponsored by the University and the Mount
Vernon Ladies' Association. He has edited
several volumes of the history of the
trans-Mississippi West.

Mr. Bowers' works are entitled "Tales of
Adventure" and "Tales of War", volumes V and
VI in "The Works of Stephen Crane." The two
volumes are part of a ten — volume edition
being published by the University of Virginia
Press. The two newly published volumes are a
collection of short stories.

The University is one of ten universities
participating in a project sponsored by the
National Endowment for the Arts and
Humanities and the Center for Editions of
American Authors to publish definitive editions
of the works of American authors.

Bowers has also edited "The Dramatic
Works in the Beaumont and Fletcher Canon,"
which was published by the Cambridge
University Press.
