Alumni Offer Faculty
Entertainment Funds

By Ann Brown
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Faculty members will now be able to
receive money to entertain students in
their homes. This financing will be
provided by an alumni fund set up as the
result of efforts made by University
president, Edgar F. Shannon.

The establishment of this fund was
announced by Mr. Shannon at a faculty
meeting held Tuesday, November 24
following several remarks made by the
president concerning student-faculty
relations. Communication at the
University is "more open than last spring
but not fully," said Mr. Shannon. He
mentioned his own efforts in these areas,
including dormitory visits, and more frequent
conversations with faculty members. He also
called for further efforts on the part of the
faculty to meet and communicate with
students.

"Students don't know each other very
well," he added and suggested that teachers
invite students to their homes as a means of
establishing "all around better relations." Mr.
Shannon commented on the need for continued
vitality in faculty-administration and
faculty-student rapport.

The president stated that a memo had been
sent to all deans on that day notifying them
that the alumni fund had been set up.

David Shannon, Dean of the Faculty of Arts
and Sciences, told The Cavalier Daily that this
fund would provide up to $35 for each
occasion with a maximum of three such
opportunities per faculty member.
