To Bristol Newspaper Chain

By Kip Klein

The sale of The Charlottesville
Progress to Worrell Newspapers, Inc., of
Bristol, Va., was announced last Friday in
a joint announcement by the two firms.

All stock of The Daily Progress, Inc.,
which is owned by the Lindsay family,
will be transferred to Worrell Newspapers,
effective January 1. The sale price was
not disclosed.

Worrell Newspapers, headed by T.
Eugene Worrell, owns a number of daily
newspapers, including the Virginia-Tennessean
and -Courier in Bristol, News Journal in
Radford, Southwest Times in Pulaski, and News
Herald in Suffolk.

A number of potential buyers were
reportedly interviewed, but the stockholders
chose to sell the paper to Mr. Worrell's
corporation on the basis of his interest in
Virginia papers and on the quality of his
publications.

Due to the change in ownership, Lindsay B.
Mount, assistant general manager of The Daily
Progress, will become its publisher. J. W.
Gentry will continue in his capacity as general
manager until June 1972 when he is due to
retire.

The joint announcement said that no other
changes in management or operations are
planned.

Now in its 78th year of publication. The
Daily Progress was founded in 1892 by James
H. Lindsay.

In September 1968 The Daily Progress was
expanded from a Monday through Saturday
publication to a seven-day-a-week newspaper.
