Thieves Hit
Parked Cars
Over Weekend

Cars parked in the fraternity area and
left unlocked were hit hard this weekend
as the Charlottesville Police Department
reports close to 40 cases of purse and
petty thefts totaling almost $600 in cash
and unvalued amounts of personals.

The majority of cases were reported to have
occurred in the Rugby-Grady area. The typical
case was of a car parked in a fraternity parking
area while its owner was attending a party.
Items stolen ranged from personal effects such
as jewelry and clothing to purses and cash.

Timothy Carwile was attending the Virginia
football game and had parked adjacent to
Garret Hall on McCormick Road. He returned
to find he and his date had lost an estimated
$342 worth of clothing. Mr. Carwile is a
student of the University of Richmond. This
case was the only theft reported on the
grounds.

Detective Oravec of the University Department
of Security assured The Cavalier Daily
that his force was working in close conjunction
with the Charlottesville police.

Off the grounds Miss Janet D. Dempster lost
the largest single amount from her car. She
had parked on Cabell Avenue and was attending
a fraternity party. She returned to Fredricksburg
$210 poorer.

The latest rash of thefts is being carefully
investigated by the Charlottesville force.
