Local Citizens Establish Fund
In Memory Of Late Student
Churchill Jordan, a black graduate
education student at the University,
who died last month in an automobile
crash near Waynesboro, has recently
had a scholarship fund established in
his name.
Ritchie Haney, program director of
radio station WINA and chairman of
the scholarship committee, commented
on the goals of the committee,
by saying, "We wish to establish in
perpetuity a U.Va. scholarship in
Churchill's name going each year to a
deserving Virginia student.
"We envision the finest scholarship
of its type at the University." The
committee hopes to establish a trust
fund that will yield sufficient interest,
without touching its principal, to
provide for the yearly scholarship.
"The base must come from this
community Churchill's community
through local contributions. But
once that firm base is established we
are prepared to venture into other
avenues to fulfill the goals of the
scholarship."
Stressing that of every contribution
goes into the Scholarship Fund."
Haney said that, "money used for such
things as travel, stationary, and letterheads
is being raised from within the committee
and not taken from the fund."
Mr. Haney added that the initial response
to the drive has been "heated" in
addition to the committee itself, there are
many other people actively involved, including
Churchill's mother and widow: also,
several committees are being formed within
the University community to further the
aims of the Fund.
Committee members include Mr. Haney
Eugene Williams, manager of Universal Life
Insurance Company and former president of
the local NAACP chapter: Wesley Mccle
U.Va. graduate student: McKinley anne
