Scholarship Fund To Honor
Student Killed Last Month
Plans have been announced to establish
a scholarship fund here in honor of a
University student who died in an
automobile crash near Waynesboro on
January 22.
The establishment of the Churchill
Jordan Scholarship Fund was announced
last week by Ritchie Haney, program
director at radio station WINA. Mr.
Jordan, 27, was a graduate student in the
University's School of Education.
Albemarle Native
A native of Albemarle County, Mr. Jordan
was a graduate of St. Paul's College. Recently
he wrote and narrated an hour-long documentary
program, "A Message from a Black Man,"
which was first aired on WINA Jan 8. The
program was rebroadcast Monday night.
Mr. Haney said the "response to the
program was unbelievable . . . " About $1,000
was raised for the second airing and has been
turned over to the scholarship fund.
Sounder Foundation
"He had learned a lot from life because he
felt all facets of life had meaning," Mr. Haney
said. "He had already worked with and helped
provide a sounder foundation for many
deprived children. This scholarship in his name
will not adequately take the place of the many
years of useful work he looked forward to."
Mr. Haney continued, "It will, I feel, be
compatible with his ideals and desires by
providing each year a scholarship for a
deserving black student from Virginia." He
stressed the need for donations to the fund,
checks for which should be directed to either
WINA or to the University.
