Center Offers
Community Aid

Madison Hall, across from the Rotunda,
is supposed to be the official
University center for participation and
involvement in volunteer community and
social service in the University, Charlottesville-Albemarle
County and
throughout Central Virginia.

Up until a few weeks ago, this was not the
case. Ralph Brown, a resident of Charlottesville,
decided to try and organize all the previously
unsuccessful programs into one cohesive unit
under the name of Madison Hall.

Paul DeVries. a salaried employee of
Madison Hall, was placed in charge of the
program, and Jane Back, director of the Trinity
Program, joined the group in an advisory
capacity. They started by sending out questionnaires
to students who had shown interest. 300
of these questionnaires were returned. The
most pressing need of Charlottesville students is
tutoring, so Madison Hall has started a tutoring
program.

The purpose of the program is to offer
tutoring to all students from pre-school through
high school who are unable to get it themselves.
All the tutors will be University students who
have time to offer once a week for teaching.

There will be one student per tutor, and the
program will ultimately be run by the
University students. There is still a great need
for tutors, and if any student is interested, he
may call Mr. DeVries at 924-3193 or 295-3032
daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. or from 9 to 11
evenings.

The program has been received very well by
the School Board, and the Administration.
Their ultimate goal is to centralize all
volunteer services at the University. All
students are invited to participate.
