Students Get Voting Privileges
On Regular Faculty Committees

By Bill Fryer

For the first time in University history
eight students have been granted full
voting privileges on five regular faculty
committees.

The Faculty of the College of Arts and
Sciences, in announcing the decision,
stated Wednesday that "it seems
appropriate that students should serve on
such standing committees as are
concerned with the formulation of
policy, and not on those committees
which are concerned with the application
of these policies to individuals, either
faculty or students.

Committee Members

A breakdown of the members to serve on
the committees and the primary functions of
each committee is as follows:

Academic Legislation — Eight faculty,
students Bob Fisher and Bruce Wine, and three
ex officio. It considers proposed legislation
pertaining to curriculum, academic standards,
and like matters, and studies proposed new
rules and courses and makes recommendations
concerning them to the Faculty.

Admissions Policy — Three faculty, student
Kevin Mannix. Assists and advises the Dean of
Admissions. It informs faculty of pertinent
admission policies.

Athletics — Three faculty, student Bob
Cullen. It informs faculty of those activities of
the Department of Athletics that relate to the
College.

Community and Branch Colleges — faculty,
students Dave Bowman and Ron Cass. It studies
the function of the Community College, branch
and extension programs as they relate to the
College.

Educational Policy and the Budget — Eight
faculty, students Bill Fryer, Paul Hurdle, and Al
Sinesky, and two ex officio. It studies
educational policy and academic standards, and
curriculum requirements and all matters of
policy with regard to requirements for major
subjects.

Meetings Delayed

The committees were supposedly intended
to start functioning early in the fall, but only
two have met formally. Students on the other
committees are still waiting word as to when
they will be called to action.

Kevin Mannix, a member of the Committee
on Admissions, reported that in a meeting last
week the group decided to investigate their
original responsibilities. Last year the
Committee's work was largely confined to
reporting briefly to the Faculty on the new first
year class and pertinent admissions policies.

The only other committee to have met is the
Committee on Academic Legislation. Bruce
Wine stated that the work of the group was
confined to specific course changes and, as yet,
has not discussed any broad areas in academic
life.

Revitalization

The only other action concerning the
committees is L.A. Beaurline's proposal for
revitalizing the central core of undergraduate
life. Mr. Beaurline has mailed his proposal to
each member of the Committee on Educational
Policy and the Budget for consideration. He
will also hold a meeting later in the month in
the first year dormitories to discuss his ideas.

After the first faculty meeting the
committees should begin to function on a more
regular basis.
