Honor Program Open
To Second-Year Men

Second-year students who intend
to declare a major next week
are possibly eligible to enter one of
several honors programs, instead of
a regular major, in the fields of
Economics, English, History, Geology,
Government and Foreign
Affairs, philosophy, psychology,
Religion, and Romance Languages.

Students admitted to Honors
normally must have a G.P.A. of at
least 3.0 and be sufficiently motivated
to work independently in
their chosen field, according to
George B. Thomas, Chairman of the
faculty Committee on Special Projects.

Honors work largely frees a
student from ordinary classes and
grades and allows him to concentrate
on a more challenging program
of independent reading, the
writing of frequent papers, and
intensive discussion in tutorials and
small honors seminars.

The degree a student receives -
Honors, High Honors, or Highest
Honors - is based entirely on a
thesis written in the final year and a
set of written and oral examinations
given at the end of that
year and evaluated by distinguished
examiners brought in from other
universities.

A prize of $1,000 is awarded at
graduation to the best Honors
student in that Year's graduating
class.

Students who wish to apply or
want further details should consult
the Director of Honors for the
department they are interested in.

Rising third-year students in the
College are reminded that, during
next week, they should confer with
their Association Deans about declaring
a major or inform them of
their plans to transfer. These
students should first report to the
lobby of Old Cabell Hall between 2
o'clock and 5 o'clock each afternoon
between April 10 through 17,
and receive instructions about the
procedure.
