1500 Pints Set As Goal
In Annual Blood Fund Drive
With a record goal of 1500 pints
of blood set, the University's 1969
Blood Drive opens this week.
As in the past, this year's drive is
being sponsored by the University
Union in conjunction with the
American National Red Cross Chapter
of Charlottesville and the
University of Virginia Hospital.
Students may give blood from 9
a.m. to 5 p.m. and again from 6 to
9 p.m. at the Barringer Wing of the
University Hospital, Monday
through Friday. The drive, now in
progress, will continue for the
remainder of the semester.
An increased need for blood in
the Charlottesville area has been
reported because the Washington,
D.C. Red Cross Chapter, which
used to supply most of this area's
blood, has ceased sending it. The
Hospital and the Red Cross here
have indicated they are relying
heavily on student donors this year.
Student response has been good
in the past as shown by the 100
pint surplus with which last year's
goal of 1000 pints was met.
In order to give blood, a student
must either be 21 years old or have
parental permission. Permission
slips may be obtained at the
University Union office in Newcomb
Hall or at the Blood Bank in
the Barringer Wing.
University organizations and
dormitory corridors which participate
100 per cent in the blood
drive are promised a free keg of
beer by the University Union. This
goal must be achieved by Thursday,
April 10 for the keg to be awarded.
For the first time, bloodmobiles
will be set up temporarily in the
dormitory areas during the drive.
All students are urged by the
sponsoring organizations to participate
in the drive. Each donor
receives credit from any Red Cross
center to meet the blood needs of
any member of his immediate
family for a year.
A post card permission slip has
been sent to the parents of the
first-yearmen for their signature. If
these cards are signed and returned,
it does not obligate the student to
donate blood.
Questions concerning the drive
should be directed to George
Brown, chairman of the University
Blood Drive, at 296-9952.
