Council To Discuss Role
In Open Forum Tonight
A twice-postponed debate on
"the amount of power the Student
Council should assume in governing
the student body" will be held
tonight at 8 in Jefferson Hall on the
West Range.
This "debate and discussion
forum" between members of the
Student Council and the students
will center around the motion
presented last year before the
Council by Charles Murdock, which
suggested dissolving existing auto
regulations in favor of a plan under
which the Student Council would
institute its own registration and
sticker system separate from that of
the University.
From there, it is expected that
the discussion will branch out into
the area of the Student Council's
more general role in student
government.
In this broader discussion, the
stand taken by Council representatives
Ron Hickman and ex-representative
George MacMillan of
"working through existing channels"
will be opposed by the more
liberal view represented by council
members Walker Chandler and
Kevin Mannix, who believe that the
Council should assume more power
in administrative affairs.
According to Councilman
Jackson Lears, the greatest debate
should occur over the issue of
revising the constitution of the Student
Council. "Most members of
the faction which opposes the traditional
role of the Council believe
that the revisions are necessary if
the Council is to play a wider role
in student affairs," said Mr. Lears.
"These people feel, as Rick
Evans said in his final speech as
president of the Student Council,
that the Council should not only
set policy, but should carry it out,"
he continued.
The public is invited to attend
this debate and participate in the
discussion. The debates were originally
scheduled for before Christmas
vacation, but were postponed
because of the Hong Kong Flu.
