A Christmas Aid Committee has been formed by a group of University students to help make the holiday a little merrier for many of Charlottesville's underprivileged.
The aim of the drive, according to Mr. McNeill, is to collect $2,000 by the end of next week from students. He said that he hoped each student would contribute a nickel each weekday of next week.
Porter McNeill, a member of the committee, told The Cavalier Daily yesterday that the idea for the committee came up in David Bromley's sociology class. A group of students from that class is joining with the University Union in a fund drive next week.
The money collected will then go to churches and other charitable organizations in the Charlottesville area. These organizations will distribute it to the city's poor.
Mr. McNeill pointed out that volunteers are needed to gather the money. He said that any student interested in serving on the committee should sign up on a list on Mr. Bromley's office door, 149 Cabell Hall.
"The reason the committee was formed," Mr. McNeill said, "was that we felt that something had to be done to help the underprivileged. Also, we felt that this would be a good opportunity for the University Community to do something for the Charlottesville community."
