Dormitory Counseling Talk
Scheduled In Gilmer Hall

By Jay Steer
Cavalier Day Train

A short meeting for all students
interested in applying for
dormitory counselorships will be
held this evening at 7 in Gilmer
Hall Auditorium.

At this meeting, potential applicants
will be told of the responsibilities
of a counselor and
the procedure for application.

Applications will be available
at the meeting tonight and at
the housing office in Emmet
House tomorrow through Thursday,
February 15.

Applications must be returned
to the housing office before February
22. All male students may
apply, including graduate students.

Dean B. F. D. Runk, chairman
of the Committee on Counselors,
said recently he hoped
"many good men will apply. The
Committee feels that this is one
of the most worthwhile contributions
a student can make to the
University."

"One of the biggest advantages
of being a counselor," observed
Chester R. Titus, Director of
Housing, "is the intangibles.
Counselors contribute directly to
the lives of other students. They
have a decided effect and are
most highly thought of by the
administration.

"A counselor picks up experience
and darn good training
which an employer feels is valuable,"
Mr. Titus added.

Applicants should sign up for
a "critical thinking and knowledge
of the University" test which
will be administered on Tuesday,
February 20, and Wednesday,
February 21, at 7 p.m. in Gilmer
Hall Auditorium.

Applicants then should arrange
for a twenty-minute interview on
either February 26, 27, 28, or 29. Teams of counselors will interview
applicants on general knowledge
of the University and will
ask them about hypothetical situations
which could arise while
counseling students.

Appearance, manners, poise,
sense of humor, initiative, leadership,
and sincerity are some of
the qualities counselors will look
for in the interviews. No one
category such as activities,
grades, or recommendations will
be emphasized.

In the second step of the selection
process, the Executive Committee
of Counselors will review
applications. This Committee is
composed of all senior counselors,
who recommend applicants
to the Committee on Counselors.

This year the Committee on
Counselors will be divided into
two groups. After interviewing
the applicants, this Committee
will submit an approved list of
counselors to the deans for their
comment. A list of alternates will
also be compiled.

This committee is composed
of Mr. Titus, Dean Runk, Ralph
Main, assistant director of housing,
Dean Raymond Bice, and the
three Chairmen of Counselors.

The number of counselors accepted
for next year will depend
on how many present counselors
re-apply. Deadline for counselors
to re-apply is noon on February
12.
