Gray Discusses Topic
Of Attendance Pledge
With First-Year Men

By Tom Adams

Arthur P. Gray, Chairman of
the Honor Committee, answered
questions about pledging attendance
in certain classes at Tuesday's
meeting of the First-Year
Committee of the Student Council.

He had talked with Dean
Cauthen who agreed that this
practice was perhaps a strain on
the honor system. The procedure
for taking roll in these
classes will be changed, so it will
not strain the honor code.

A similar problem had occurred
in another lecture class,
Economics I, earlier this year. It
was decided that no roll would
be taken in it.

Mr. Gray also asked the committee
members' help in getting
their halls up to the Honor
Committee's room to answer
any questions. He has sent hall
schedules to all counselors, but
so far attendance at these afternoon
orientation sessions has
been poor. He mentioned that if
a first-year man cannot make it
at his hall's scheduled time, he
may come any afternoon.

Will Lindsey, chairman of the
housing subcommittee, gave a report
on the maid service. He has
talked with several people in the
Housing Office, including the
supervisor of the maids.

Schedules of the times that
maids will clean on various
halls will be sent to hall counselors.
Students can help by finding
out when the maids will be
around so they can prepare their
rooms to make the maids' work
easier.

If any specific complaints are
to be made, students should report
the details to their counselors
who will relay the information
to the Housing Office.

The figure of $400 taken from
Dobie, which was reported in
last week's meeting, was an exaggeration,
one of the committeeman
reported. The actual
amount stolen was closer to
$100.

Committeeman Bill Noon suggested
that the First-Year Committee
should try to get first-year
representation on the Alderman
Road Committee.

There were complaints about
the meal ticket for the Contract
Cafeteria. Many first-year men
who signed up for the whole
year did not realize that it is a
binding contract, and that they
cannot sell back the ticket.

Jim Gilmore, chairman of the
food subcommittee will investigate.
