Discusses Initial Platform

Five students were nominated to
run for student council in a University
Party meeting last night,
which also discussed preliminary
ideas for a platform.

Those nominated were Don Bellamy,
Gordon Calvert, Hal Collins,
Picter Schenkkan, and Bill
Wright. Nominations will remain
open through the next meeting of
the party on November 20, at
which time four candidates will be
selected to run for seats from the
college.

Proposed planks for the party
platform, which were presented by
committee chairman Don Bellamy,
fell into three general categories.

The first category proposed ideas
for a more effective council. These
included support for the proposed
student council constitution, establishment
of a student council committee
to investigate the effectiveness
of the counseling system, and
adequate monetary support for all
University publications.

Another highly discussed plank
of this category concerned the establishment
of a more effective
society to provide entertainment
for big weekends.

The second category which dealt
with providing a better academic
atmosphere for the University,
included proposals of expanding
the first-year curriculum, disbanding
Saturday classes, lessening cut
penalties, and giving students the
option of pass-fail courses.

Planks in the third category
dealt with better student living
conditions. These included support
for a two-sticker car system and busing system to the classrooms.
Also recommended was a co-education system at the University
and the construction of
more and better student facilities.
