Official From Holy City To Speak
On Effects Of Middle East War
Jerusalem's Deputy Mayor,
Rabbi Shear Yashur Cohen,
will visit Charlottesville on November
5-6 to deliver a series of
lectures at the Hillel Foundation
and the University entitled
"After the Six Day War."
Rabbi Cohen is in this country
on an extended lecture tour under
the joint sponsorship of the
B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundations
and the United Jewish Appeal.
He will speak to college and university
groups on the East Coast.
Hillel is a national organization
which provides religious,
educational, cultural, and counselling
services for Jewish students
on campuses here and abroad.
It conducts a program at American
and Canadian colleges for
Jewish students and faculty emphasizing
the problems facing
world Jewry and Israel's role in
the creative survival of the Jewish
people. UJA is the major
source of funds for Jewish relief
needs in Israel and elsewhere.
Born in Jerusalem
Rabbi Cohen was born in Jerusalem
in 1927 and is the son
of the Rabbi and philosopher,
David Ha-Cohen, known as the
Nazir. He received his rabbinical
ordination in 1949, and was graduated
in 1955 from the Hebrew
University Faculty of Law as a
Master of Laws.
He has lectured widely in this
country and in England and written
numerous works, of which
the latest is the recently published
"Sefer Haravaia — Responses
and Decisions on Problems
of Marriage, Divorce, and
Personal Status."
Other Duties
In addition to his duties as
Deputy Mayor, Rabbi Cohen
heads the Education, Culture, and
Youth Department of the capital
city.
He was a chaplain of the Israel
Defense Forces from 1948
to 1953, chief chaplain of the Israel
Air Force from 1952 to
1953, and is now a chaplain in
the reserves with the regular
army rank of major.
Rabbi Cohen will speak at the
Hillel Foundation, 1824 University
Circle. November 5 at 8
p.m.
Monday, November 6, he will
address the Extra Legal Forum
at 4 p.m. in the Student Lounge
of the law school, and the Government
and Foreign Affairs Association
at 8 p.m. in the Graduate
Lounge at the end of the
West Range. The public is invited
to these lectures.
