Pickett Seeks Refined Registration

No Major Difficulties, But .....

By Bill Thomson
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

With only a few problems in
scheduling of first-year men, "no
major difficulties" is the consensus
of opinion concerning this year's
registration procedure.

Herbert Pickett, University
Registrar, commented that he was
"satisfied with the general procedure,"
and would work on
"needed refinements."

He remarked that "the time
cards worked amazingly well, but
that more flexibility is needed to
keep people from getting closed
out of classes."

Expressing a desire to "get
back to a one day registration,"
Mr. Pickett stated that he "did
not want to cut down time anymore"
on the registration operation
in Memorial Gym, but wanted
to "refine the process so that
each student would get as much
individual treatment as possible."

Better IDs

He went on to say that he was
undertaking a "review to see how
the photo ID cards can be made
for better quality."

Concerning the large number
of cards that students were forced
to fill out, Pickett mentioned
that "one of the aims for next
year is to cut down the number
of questions and eliminate much
of the duplication."

"This year the size of the cards
was cut down," he continued, so
now the need is to "make a more
rational system of information
collection on everything."

New Format

He pointed out the registration
card, on which a number of "irrational
questions need to be
changed." He also plans a new
design and format for the cards
next year.

As for the pre-enrollment process
itself, Mr. Pickett added
that the "percentage of successful
pre-enrollees in the College
was an extremely high 3212 out
of 3225 students."
