Allen, Clark To Vie For Office
As Seniors Stage Third Election

By LYNN STERN

A run-off election for
upcoming Senior Class
President will be held between
George Allen and Connie Clark
on Thursday, marking the third
round of balloting for the
position.

Mr. Allen received 123
votes – two short of
victory–while Miss Clark took
69 votes.

Neither candidate received
the 40 per cent of votes cast
necessary to win, but no errors
were reported in election
procedures in this go-round.

The first election was
marred by irregularities in the
voting procedure, disqualifying
the results. However, neither
Mr. Allen with 65 votes nor
Miss Clark with 47 votes had
accumulated enough of
a percentage of the votes cast
to win.

No Opposition

Running unopposed for
representatives were Ray
Humiston, College; William
Stobbart, Engineering; and Boo
Twohy, Commerce. There was
no nursing candidate.

Alderman Library was the
top candidate for the Senior
Class gift with 87 votes.

Trailing were Madison Hall
with 80 votes, 72 for the
Amphitheater, 61 for Old
Cabell Hall renovation, 47 each
for the Student Loan Fund and
WTJU radio and nine for
Emmet House Lounge.

Although the Senior Class
Executive Board is not bound
to adhere to the preferences
expressed in the balloting,
Senior Class President Pat
Patrick believes that the Board
will partition the gift funds
according to the ballot results.

In the write-in vote
category, Friends of the Earth
received one vote, Medical Aid
to Indochina got two, and one
vote was cast to repair the stain
glass in the chapel window.

The exact amount of the
Senior gift is still undetermined
and will depend on the number
of class members who take
their degrees in June. Funds
for the gift are derived from
the unused portion of the
students' comprehensive fee
after cap and gown rental.

Despite explicit instructions
on the ballots, approximately
50 votes had to be disqualified
because of erroneous marking
on the part of voters.

Eliminations

Eliminated in the second
election were John Abbitt,
Scott McWalter, David Schlitz
and David Sharp.

Mr. Patrick explained that
the basic role of the president
is that of correspondence. He is
responsible for a diverse polling
of student opinion regarding
the selection of speakers for
commencement and
baccalaureate exercises.
