University Bars Amplifiers
From Lawn, Amphitheater

By MARGARET ALFORD

Prompted by Saturday's
shutdown of a rock concert in
McIntire Amphitheater, the
Scheduling subcommittee of
the Calendar and Scheduling
Committee Tuesday voted
unanimously to prohibit use of
all electronic amplification
outdoors on the Lawn or in the
Amphitheater except for
official University ceremonial
functions.

The decision affects both
speakers and musical events.

Lawn residents' complaints
of excessive noise brought a
University Union-sponsored
concert by 'Scandal' to a halt
Saturday afternoon after the
performers had been requested
several times to turn down
their volume.

The subcommittee met to
formulate implementing
instructions concerning that
part of the President's policy
on use of University space for
extracurricular activities which
states:

"University space is
available...(for an activity)...
which does not disrupt
academic activities, scheduled
events, University functions,
and other normal pursuits that
take place in that area."

The subcommittee agreed
that the normal pursuits
around the Lawn and
Amphitheater areas are living
and studying.

Members of the committee
believed that prohibition of
electronic equipment in these
areas was necessary to insure
individual rights and protection
of all persons concerned under
the President's policy.

The prohibition will be
waived for Founder's Day,
Final Exercises, and other
official ceremonial University
events.

The decision will take
effect immediately for all
persons seeking approval for
use of University space for
extra-curricular activities.
