W&M Board Moves Dean Barnes
To Special Programs Director

By BARBARA HAND

Carson M. Barnes Jr.,
recently replaced student dean
at the College of William and
Mary, has been named to a new
college post within the school's
administration.

During a special
unannounced session of the
board of visitors' executive
committee Tuesday, Mr.
Barnes was appointed as special
programs director.

Same Salary Maintained

Maintaining the same salary,
Barnes will be associated with
the college's Virginia
Associated Research Center in
Newport News.

When the board announced
that W. Samuel Sadler, now
dean of men, would replace
Mr. Barnes, State Sen. Herbert
H. Bateman prepared to go to
court in Mr. Barnes' defense.

Sen. Bateman said Mr.
Barnes' replacement "was not
in the best interest of the
college."

He questioned, "Could this
decision be because Carson
Barnes has unsuccessfully
opposed implementation of
libertarian policies at the
college which are directly
contradictory to the public
policy and standards of
morality of the commonwealth
as formally declared by the
General Assembly?"

Mr. Bateman is noted for his
conservative views regarding
such subjects as visitation
policies in college dormitories.

Sources on the campus
indicate that there has been
growing sentiment among the
administrative staff and some
faculty members in support of
Barnes' position.

Since William and Mary is
currently trying to seek
increased funds from the state
legislature, some have
contemplated that Mr. Barne's
new appointment is an attempt
to decrease the General
Assembly's dissatisfaction with
the college.

Barnes Unpopular

Mr. Barnes has been
unpopular with both faculty
and students for over three
years, according to Dan J.
Copley, editor-in-chief of the
William and Mary newspaper.

A memorandum issued
Tuesday by William and Mary
President Thomas A. Graves Jr.
stated that Mr. Barnes' new
post is "in accordance with the
understanding reached with
him (Barnes) last spring that I
would make every effort to
identify another appropriate
administrative position for him
at the college."

In his Nov. 10 statement,
preceding the new
appointment, Mr. Barnes said,
"While there has been some
mention of alternative
employment at William and
Mary, no offer has been made
nor does it appear that he will
make such an offer."
