Leaders Push
Pay Increase
In Assembly

Ten top leaders of the
Virginia General Assembly
agreed unanimously Dec. 27 to
recommend pay increases
totaling $38.4 million for
50,000 state employees to take
place no later than July 1,
1973.
This recommendation,
issued as a report by the
Assembly's Joint Commission
to implement the Report of
the Governor's Management
Study, will go to the legislative
session that opens Jan. 10.
With such strong backing,
Governor Linwood Holton is
expected to support the
measure, which would add
about 10.73 per cent to the
state payroll.
Employees of the
Department of Buildings and
Grounds, such as painters,
plumbers, groundsmen, and
laborers, will receive 19.54 per
cent rise in salary or up to
$1296 annually.
Hospital attendants,
orderlies, and psychiatric aides
will enjoy a 19.70 per cent
increase or $1,097 a year.
"The $38.4 million is to be
allocated on the basis of job
skill and is calculated to the
state's salary scale competitive
in the labor market," the
report stated.
