Mecklenburg
Proposed As
Prison Site

By HANK EVANS

The State Department of
Welfare and Institutions
announced yesterday that it
will build a 10 million dollar
maximum security institution
in Mecklenburg County.

The facility will provide
intensive treatment for up to
400 offenders and will be
situated on county-owned
property near Boydton.

William L. Lukhard,
Director of the Department,
said that the facility would be
financed entirely by state
funds contingent on the
approval of the General
Assembly.

Mr. Lukhard said that no
federal funds would be used
because of the requirement of
preparing an Environmental
Impact Report. He stated that
the planned
diagnostic-reception center to
be built in Louisa County has
been delayed indefinitely
because the residents of the
Green Springs area opposed the
project on environmental
grounds.

The site for the facility was
chosen on the bases of the
availability of manpower,
water, sewage disposal, and
access to good roads.
