Ravens Advocate Study
Of Counseling Changes

The Raven Society voted Tuesday
night to go on record as favoring the
recommendation of the college deans
calling for a year's study of the recently
proposed changes in the counseling
program.

This decision followed the
Raven-sponsored panel discussion of the
new program by Charles H. Whitebread,
Irby B. Cauthen and James L. Malone,
challenging the changes, and Chester R.
Titus, D. Alan Williams and Richard F.
Shutts, defending them.

The Ravens first considered a motion
by K. Stewart Evans, a third-year law
student, asking that the society take
stands on issues of importance to the
University. Mr. Evans stressed that the
constitution called upon the organization
to take a leadership role, as well as to
honor fellow students and faculty
members by inviting them to join.

No action was taken on the general
motion, but the specific question of the
counseling proposals was discussed. A
voice vote was taken and a hand vote was
called for. Mr. Whitebread, although not a
member, was allowed to speak. He stated
that a Raven decision on the issue would
carry weight in the University
community.

The final vote was 19 favoring the
deans' proposal to five opposing it.

The society decided to send a letter to
Mr. Williams expressing their sentiments.

Mr. Paul Hurdle, president of the
society, explained last night that the
letter would be sent to Mr. Williams as
soon as possible.
